London Buses route R4 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Pauls Cray Hill and Locksbottom, it is operated by London General.


History Edit

Route R4 was commenced operating on 16 August 1986 between Paul Cray Hill Augustine Road and Locks Bottom Pallant Way via Augustine Road - Chalk Pit Avenue - Main Road - Station Road - Mill Brook Road - St. Mary Cray High Street ,Kent Road - Lower Road - Perry Hall Road - Goodmead Road - Chislehurst Road - - Orpington High Street - Orpington War Memorial - Station Road - Station Approach - Orpington Bus Station - Station Approach - Station Road - Tubbenden Lane,Farnborough Way - Starts Hill Road - Starts Road - Crofton Road as a Monday to Saturday service. The route was initially operated by Roundabout from their Orpington (OB) garage using Robin Hood bodied Ivecos and Optare Citypacers.

On 11 August 1990, the Optare Citypacers were withdrawn.

On 24 April 1991, the route was diverted in Farnborough via Tubbenden Drive - Northlands Avenue - Southlands Avenue - Beechcroft Way.

On 24 April 1993, the Robin Hood bodied Ivecos were replaced by Marshall bodied Ivecos.

On 2 December 1995, the route passed to CentreWest operating from their Orpington (Y) garage using Marshall bodied Mercedes Benz 811Ds and a Sunday service was introduced.

On 8 November 1999, the route was converted to low floor operation using Marshall Capital bodied Dennis Dart SLFs.

On 1 December 2001, the route was retained by First London and was diverted via Ramsden Estate.

On 25 September 2004, the route was extended from Locks Bottom to Princess Royal Hospital.

On 8 December 2007, the route was included in the sale of First London's Orpington (Y) garage to Metrobus and the allocation was transfered to Orpington (MB) garage.

On 3 December 2011, the route was retained by Metrobus with Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLFs and brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 Darts introduced.

In July 2014, the Go-Ahead Group restructured its bus operations, which included the transfer of Route R4 from Metrobus to Go-Ahead London.

On 1 April 2017, the route was retained by London General using Wright StreetLites.
