London Buses route N9 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Heathrow Terminal 5 and Aldwych, it is operated by Metroline.

History[]

Route N9 is the night service for route 9 between Hammersmith and Aldwych, it then continues from Hammersmith to Heathrow Airport via Hounslow, Brentford, Turnham Green and Chiswick.

It started on 25 February 1994 and provided a night service between Trafalgar Square and Kingston via Piccadilly Circus, Hyde Park Corner, Kensington, Hammersmith, Fulham Palace Road, Putney, Barnes, East Sheen, Richmond, then Twickenham, Fulwell and Teddington. The route was introduced to replace routes N65 and N92. The N9 was initially operated by London United from Stamford Brook (V) garage using Leyland Olympians.

On 9 November 1996, the route was reallocated to Hounslow (AV) garage and MCW Metrobuses were introduced. On 8 March 1997, the route was extended from Trafalgar Square to Aldwych. On 31 March 2001 the contract was renewed by London United, and the N9 was converted to low floor double deck operation using Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.

The N9 used to run to and from Kingston via Putney, Putney Heath and Roehampton. It was rerouted to Heathrow Airport Central Bus Station on 29 September 2001 replacing the withdrawn section of route N97 between Hammersmith and Heathrow. Route N10 replaced the section of the N9 to Putney and route 85 replaced the section from Putney to Kingston, but the section between Richmond and Kingston was replaced by route 65, a 24-hour service.

On 4 September 2004, the route was retained by London United.

On 22 March 2008, the route was extended from Heathrow Central to Heathrow Terminal 5, following the extension of the Piccadilly Line.

On 3 September 2011, the route was retained by London United RATP.

On 25 January 2019, the Scania OmniCitys were replaced by New Routemasters and the allocation was transferred to Stamford Brook (V) garage.

On 15 June 2019, the route was re-routed via Piccadilly Circus and Piccadilly.

On 27 January 2024, the route passed to Metroline operating from Brentford (AH) garage using existing New Routemasters.
