London Buses route N44 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Aldwych and Sutton, it is operated by London General.


History[]

Route N44 commenced operation on 19 August 1995 between Aldwych and Sutton via Whitehall - Westminster Bridge - Lambeth Palace Road - Albert Embankment - Nine Elms Lane - Battersea - Wandsworth - Garratt Lane - Earlsfield - Tooting Broadway - Mitcham - St Helier - Carshalton - Wallington - Carshalton Road. The route initially operated by London General from their Stockwell (SW) garage using MCW Metrobuses. The route replaced route N88 between Trafalgar Square and Sutton.

On 27 April 1996, the route was extended from Trafalgar Square to Aldwych.

On 29 May 1999, the route was retained by London General and the allocation was transferred to Sutton (A) garage.

On 9 September 2000, the allocation was transferred back to Stockwell (SW) garage and was converted to low floor operation using Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.

On 13 December 2003, the route was rerouted at Rose Hill direct to Sutton Station instead of via Carshalton and Wallington and the frequency was increased, replacing the withdrawn section of Route N155 the section between Sutton and Wallington was replaced by revised N213.

On 4 December 2004, the route was rerouted via the new Vauxhall Bus Station.

On 3 June 2006, the route was retained by London General.

On 11 November 2006, the route was diverted at Battersea via Chelsea Bridge, Victoria, and Victoria Street instead of Nine Elms and Vauxhall.

On 1 June 2013, the route was retained by London General.

On 2 June 2018, the route was retained by London General with brand new Enviro 400 MMC bodied Alexander Dennis E40Hs introduced.

On 14 June 2019, the route was diverted via Wandle Road and Morden Road due to the collapse of Bishopsford Bridge.

On 6 December 2021, the route returned to its routing at Bishopsford Bridge.
