London Buses route 422 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Bexleyheath and North Greenwich, it is operated by Stagecoach London.
History[]
Route 422 commenced operation on 16 January 1988 when route 122 was withdrawn between Bexleyheath and Plumstead. Route 422 was initially run by Bexleybus between Bexleyheath and Woolwich, providing an overlap with route 122 between Woolwich and Plumstead.
The poor performance of Bexleybus resulted in the route passing to Boro'line on 26 November 1988.
On 17 February 1992, Boro'line was bought out by Kentish Bus which was purchased by British Bus in 1994, who in turn sold out to The Cowie Group in August 1996.
On 16 October 1993, Crayford (CR) garage was announced closed and the allocation was transferred to Dartford (DT) garage.
On 23 January 1999, the route passed to London Central operating from their Bexleyheath (BX) garage with Leyland Titans introduced.
To coincide with the opening of the Jubilee line extension, on 29 May 1999 route 422 was extended from Woolwich to North Greenwich.
On 1 April 2000, the route was converted to low floor operation using Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.
On 2 June 2001, the route was rerouted in North Greenwich between the Bus Station and Blackwall Lane via Edmund Halley Way, West Parkside, and John Harrison Way.
On 24 January 2004, the route was retained by London Central and was extended daily from Bexleyheath Shopping Centre to Bexleyheath Garage.
On 25 November 2006, the route was rerouted towards North Greenwich via new bus-only link Road after Westcombe Hill.
On 22 January 2011, the route was retained by London Central with new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TLs introduced.
On 5 November 2011, brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s were introduced alongside the existing Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TLs.
On 20 January 2018, the route passed to Stagecoach London operating from their Plumstead (PD) garage using Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s and Alexander Dennis Enviro 400Hs. On the same day, the route was withdrawn between Bexleyheath garage and Bexleyheath town centre.
From 9 July 2018, due to public complaints from residents, it was decided that route 422 will not stand on Woolwich Road in Bexleyheath during the hours of 7 pm - 6 am daily. Instead, during these hours it will stand at the Bus Station (Market Place) used by routes like 269, 486 and B14 after alighting passengers at the Clock Tower.
