London Buses route 287 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Abbey Wood Lane and Barking, it is operated by Stagecoach London.


History 

Route 287 commenced operation on 4 September 1982 and provided a service between Rainham Abbey Wood Lane and Becontre Chittys Lane via Dagenham - Rippleside - Movers Lane - Barking - Barking Garage. The route was operated by London Transport from their Barking (BK) garage using Leyland Titans. The route was introduced to replace route 156 and the withdrawn section of route 87.

In 1987, the Saturday service was extended from Becontree to Becontree Heath and further extended Mon-Fri except evenings to Marks Gate.

In 1993, the route passed to Docklands Transit and converted to midibus operation using Carlyle bodied Mercedes Benz 811Ds. The route was withdrawn between Barking and Ilford at the same time.

In 1997, the route passed to Stagecoach East London operating from their Barking (BK) garage using Carlyle Dartline bodied Dennis Darts.

In 1998, the route was extended from Barking to Harts Lane Estate. The Carlyle Dartlines were replaced by Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Darts at the same time.

In 2001, the route was converted to low floor using Alexander ALX200 bodied Dennis Dart SLFs and the route was withdrawn between Barking and Harts Lane Estate - this section was replaced by route 368.

In 2006, the route was retained by Stagecoach East London.

On 26 March 2011, the route was retained by East London and the allocation was transferred to Rainham (RM) garage.

In July 2011, the Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Tridents were replaced by brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s.

In 2012, the route was rerouted eastbound in Rainham via Viking Way instead of Broadway towards Abbey Wood Lane.

The route will be retained by Stagecoach London from 24 March 2018.
