London Buses route 280 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between St George Hospital and Belmont, it is operated by London General.


History

Route 280 commenced service on 22 March 1969 between Tooting Broadway and Walton on the Hill Howard via Mitcham - St Helier - Sutton - Belmont Station - Brighton Road - New Road - Mere Road - Walton Street as a Monday to Saturday service. The route was introduced to replace the withdrawn section of route 80 between Sutton and Tooting. The route was initially operated by London Transport from their Sutton (A) garage using AEC Regent IIIs.

On 5 January 1974, the route was converted to one person operation using Daimler Fleetlines and a Sunday service was introduced to replace the withdrawn section of route 88.

On 23 October 1976, the Monday to Saturday service was extended from Belmont to Lower Kingswood.

On 31 March 1979, the route was diverted via Banstead to replace withdrawn route 164A.

On 24 April 1982, the route was withdrawn between Belmont and Lower Kingswood.

On 27 April 1985, the Monday to Saturday service was extended from Tooting to Wandsworth via route 44.

On 26 November 1988, the route was withdrawn between Belmont and Sutton, the Sunday service was awithdrawn and the allocation was transferred to Merton (AL) garage.

On 25 May 1991, withdrawn between Tooting and Wandsworth and diverted instead to Colliers Wood Station, the withdrawn section was mainly replaced by new route 270, a Sunday service was reintroduced and the Daimler Fleetlines were replaced by MCW Metrobuses.

On 9 November 1991, the route was diverted at Tooting to St Georges Hospital instead of Colliers Wood.

In 2000, the route was converted to low floor operation using Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.

On 23 July 2005, the route was retained by London General.

On 21 July 2012, the route was retained by London General.

In July 2016, Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s and Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs were introduced.

The route will be retained by London General from 22 July 2017.
