London Buses route 263 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Barnet Hospital and Highbury, it is operated by Metroline.


Route 263 commenced operation on 16 January 1971 between Barnet High Street and Farringdon Street via Archway station, Holloway, King's Cross and Grays Inn Road. The route was initially operated by London Transport from their Finchley (FY) and Holloway (HT) garages using AEC Routemasters.

On 15 July 1972, it was converted to one man operation using Daimler Fleetlines.

On 27 September 1980, MCW Metrobuses were introduced.

On 23 April 1983, route 263 was withdrawn south of Archway station, but extended north to Potters Bar station replacing part of route 134. The route was converted to full MCW Metrobus operation at the same time. On 21 June 1986, it was curtailed to Potters Bar garage, with the section to Potters Bar station being replaced by route 84.

In 1989, the MCW Metrobuses were replaced by Alexander-bodied Scania N112s.

On 2 February 1991, the Sunday service was withdrawn between Barnet and Potters Bar Garage and the service was increased to compensate for withdrawal of route 17 between North Finchley and Archway.

On 25 June 1994, the route was withdrawn between Barnet Hospital and Potters Bar garage, being replaced by route 234.

On 3 February 1996, the route passed to Leaside Buses operating from their Wood Green (WN) garage using Northern Counties Palatine II bodied DAF DB250s.

On 28 April 2001, the route passed to First Capital operating from their Northumberland Park (NP) garage using Northern Counties Palatine 1 bodied Volvo Olympians.

On 2 February 2002, route 263 passed to Metroline operating from their Potters Bar (PB) garage using Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Tridents.

On 26 July 2003, the allocation was transferred to Holloway (HT) garage and Plaxton President bodied Dennis Tridents were introduced.

On 27 March 2004, the allocation was transferred to Potters Bar (PB) garage.

On 7 February 2009, Metroline retained the route using Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s. On this date the route was extended to Holloway.

On 26 July 2014, the route was extended from Holloway to Highbury Barn.

On 6 February 2016, the route was retained by Metroline using Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s.

On 13 February 2016, the route was temporarily withdrawn between Highbury & Islington Station and Highbury Barn.

On 4 November 2017, the route was restored to Highbury Barn.
