London Buses route 208 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Lewisham, Shopping Centre and Orpington, Perry Hall Road, it is operated by Stagecoach London .
Route 208 commenced operating on 4 September 1982 between Orpington and Lewisham station replacing the discontinued route 94, extending to Surrey Docks station on Saturday mornings. Initially operated by AEC Routemasters, these were replaced by crewed Leyland Titans on 11 June 1984 with the route converted to one man operation on 2 February 1986.
There have been periods of single deck operation. Leyland Nationals were used for a few years, and more recently Dennis Lances were used between March 1994 and November 1997. In both cases single deckers were completely unsuitable, and mainly used on the quieter Orpington end.
Route 208 is increasingly unusual in operating in two overlapping sections, Orpington to Catford and Bromley Common to Lewisham. Running the extra frequency by way of short workings between Bromley and Catford was tried but was discontinued after about a year.
On 28 April 2001, Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Tridents were introduced to convert the route to low floor.
On 30 July 2005, the route was retained by Stagecoach London.
On 28 August 2010, all journeys running between Orpington and Lewisham, previously had been operated in two sections Lewisham & Bromley Common / Catford & Orpington.
On 28 July 2012, the route was retained by Stagecoach London with Alexander Dennis Enviro400s and Alexander Dennis Enviro 400Hs introduced.
