London Buses route 146 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Downe and Bromley, it is operated by Stagecoach London.


History Edit

Route 146 commenced operating on 3 October 1934 between Lewisham Rennell Street and Westerham Hill via Catford - Bromley - Hayes Common - Keston - Leaves Green - Biggin Hill as a Saturday and Sunday service. The route was initially operated by London Transport from their Catford (TL) garage using AEC Regent STs.

In April 1935, the Sunday Catford (TL) allocation moved to Old Kent Road (P) garage.

In June 1935, Saturday Old Kent Road (P) and Sunday Catford (TL) allocations added.

In October 1935, the Old Kent Road (P) allocation was withdrawn.

In April 1936, the Sunday Old Kent Road (P) allocation was reintroduced.

From 4 October 1936 until 1952 the route would be suspended during the Winter months.

In 1937, Bromley (TB) gained an allocation.

In 1949, AEC Regent III's were introduced.

On 14 May 1952, a Daily service was introduced and Bromley (TB) garage gained the full allocation.

In 1975, AEC Routemasters were introduced on Sundays.

In 1978, the route was converted to one person operation using Bristol LHs.

In 1982, the Sunday was withdrawn and Leyland Nationals were introduced.

In 1985, the route passed to Crystals Coaches using Lex Maxeta-bodied Bedford YMQSs.

In 1988, Optare StarRiders were introduced.

In 1991, the route passed to Metrobus operating from their Orpington (MB) garage using Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Darts.

In 2000, the route was converted to low floor using Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLFs and the allocation was transferred to Godstone (GG) garage (certain journeys were operated from Orpington (MB) garage).

In March 2006, the allocation was transferred to Orpington (MB) garage (certain journeys were operated from Croydon (C) garage).

In August 2006, the route was retained by Metrobus using East Lancs Esteem bodied Dennis Dart SLFs and the additional journeys operated by Croydon (C) garage was discontinued.

In 2007, a Sunday service was introduced.

In 2011, the route was retained by Metrobus.

On 20 August 2016, the route passed to Stagecoach London operating from their Bromley (TB) garage using brand new Enviro 200 MMC bodied Alexander Dennis E20Ds.
