London Buses route 138 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Coney Hall and Bromley, it is operated by London General.

History Edit

Route 138 commenced operation on 14 July 1990 between Catford Bridge Station and Coney Hall via Brookhouse Road - Southend Lane - Downham - Churchdown Way - Downham Way - Rangfield Road - Burnt Ash Lane - College Road - Bromley North - Bromley South - Westmoreland Road - Pickhurst Lane - Hayes Stn - Bourne Way - Croydon Road - Kingsway - Church Drive - Queensway - Chestnut Avenue - Sylvan Way - Layhams Road - Birch Tree Avenue - Queensway and Princes Way. The route was initially operated from Selkent from their Catford (TL) garage using Optare StarRiders and MCW Metroriders. The route was introduced to replace withdrawn routes B1 and L3.

On 19 January 1991, the Sunday service was withdrawn and buses arriving at Coney Hall was re-routed to operate direct from Kingsway to Princes Way instead of loop via Layhams Road although the loop was still used for departing buses from Coney Hall (evenings excepted). The MCW Metroriders were replaced by Wright bodied Mercedes Benz 811Ds at the same time.

On 12 February 1994, the route passed to Kentish Bus operating from their Dartford (LM) garage using Optare Metroriders and a Sunday service was reintroduced.

On 25 February 1995, the route passed to London Links operating from their Croydon (CR) garage using Optare Metroriders.

On 18 June 1995, the route passed to Kentish Bus operating from their Bromley (BY) garage using Optare Metroriders.

On 4 November 1995, the allocation was transferred to Dartford (LM) garage.

On 2 December 1995, the route passed to Metrobus operating from their Orpington (MB) garage using Optare Metroriders.

On 18 August 2001, the Optare Metroriders were replaced by Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Darts.

On 25 September 2004, the route was withdrawn between Bromley and Catford Bridge, the withdrawn section was replaced by revised route 336.

In December 2004, the route was converted to low floor using Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLFs.

On 18 March 2006, the route was retained by Metrobus with East Lancs Esteem bodied Dennis Dart SLFs introduced.

On 16 March 2013, the route was retained by Metrobus with brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 Darts introduced.

In July 2014, the Go-Ahead Group restructured its bus operations, which included the transfer of Route 138 from Metrobus to Go-Ahead London.

The route will be retained by London General from 17 March 2018.
