London Buses route 11 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Fulham Broadway and Waterloo, it is operated by London General.
History
Route 11 was introduced by the London General Omnibus Company in August 1906 and is amongst the oldest routes to have operated continuously in London, although its route has changed on several occasions.
On 5 August 1922, Leyland LB (London Bus) type buses were introduced on route 11 by Arthur George Partridge and Christopher Dodson Ltd with chocolate livery and the fleet name "Express".
On 5 September 1932, Q1 buses were used on this route which operated from Liverpool Street to Shepherd's Bush.
On 2 May 1951, Leyland Titan RTW buses were introduced on route 11.
The route starts at Fulham Broadway and operates via the West End and some of London's most famous landmarks to Liverpool Street Bus Station. The journey from the top deck is a cheap means of sightseeing in London. It previously ran to Hammersmith until being replaced west of Fulham Broadway.
On 17 July 1993, the route was withdrawn between Fulham Broadway and Hammersmith and this section was replaced by route 211.
In October 1996, London General buses operating on route 11 from its Waterloo (RA) garage switched to City Diesel.
On 27 June 1998, the route was retained by London General.
It has been operated by London General since the privatisation of London bus services. It was operated out of Waterloo (RA) garage until 25 May 2002, when the AEC Routemasters were transferred to Stockwell (SW) garage to make way for the Red Arrow Mercedes-Benz Citaro articulated buses.
On 1 November 2003, the route was retained by London General and was converted to one man operation with the AEC Routemasters replaced by Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs.
On 30 October 2010, the route was retained by London General.
On 21 September 2013, the Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs were replaced by brand New Routemasters.
In September 2016, conductors were removed from the buses on route 11 meaning the buses only operate with drivers only.
On 31 October 2015, the route was retained by London General.
On 6 November 2017, the route was temporarily revised to finish journeys in Old Broad Street and start from London Wall direct to Old Broad Street.
On 12 October 2019, the route was restored to Liverpool Street Bus Station.
On 30 November 2019, the route was withdrawn between Bank and Liverpool Street Bus Station, and was re-routed via Threadneedle Street and Bishopsgate to Shoreditch.
On 29 April 2023, the route was withdrawn between Parliament Square and Shoreditch and was rerouted to Waterloo via Westminister Bridge replacing former route 507.[1]
