London Buses route X68 was a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. It ran between West Croydon and Russell Square, it was operated by London Central.
History[]
Route X68 commenced operation on 27 October 1986 between Russell Square and West Croydon Bus Station via Holborn - Aldwych - Waterloo - then Limited stop to West Norwood - Upper Norwood - Thornton Heath. The route was initially operated by London Transport from their Norwood (N) garage using Leyland Titans.
On 27 March 1999, the route was retained by Arriva London.
On 29 April 2000, the route was converted to low floor operation using Alexander ALX400 bodied DAF DB250LFs.
In 2004, the Alexander ALX400 bodied DAF DB250LFs were replaced by Alexander ALX400 bodied Volvo B7TLs.
On 3 April 2006, the route passed to London Central operating from their Camberwell (Q) garage using brand new Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs.
On 2 April 2011, the route was retained by London Central.
On 4 April 2011, part of the allocation was transferred to Peckham (PM) and a Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TL was introduced.
On 1 September 2014, a crosslink with routes 624 and 658 were introduced.
In November 2014, Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s were introduced alongside existing Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs.
In October 2016, the Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs was replaced by a brand new MCV EvoSeti bodied Volvo B5LH.
In February 2017, Optare Olympus bodied Dennis Tridents were introduced alongside the existing Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s, Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs and MCV EvoSeti bodied Volvo B5LHs.
In July 2017, the Peckham (PM) allocation was transferred to Camberwell (Q) garage and Route was converted to a full Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 and Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TL operation.
On 31 March 2018, the route was retained by London Central using brand new Enviro 400 MMC bodied Alexander Dennis E40Hs. A crosslink with route 188 was introduced at the same time.
On 20 March 2020, the crosslinks with routes 624 and 658 were withdrawn.
On 3 September 2022, a new timetable was introduced on Monday to Fridays with journey times revised to better reflect current traffic levels.
On 28 July 2023, the crosslink with route 188 was withdrawn.
On 31 July 2023, the route was renumbered to SL6 as part of the Superloop.
