London Buses route 169 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Clayhall and Barking, it is operated by Stagecoach London.


History

Route 169 was commenced operation on 19 August 1959 and provided a service between Barkingside High Street and Barking London Road via Tanners Lane - Horns Road - Newbury Park - Ley Street - Ilford - Ilford Lane. The route was initially operated by London Transport from their Barking (BK) garage Road using AEC Regent III RT's. The route was introduced as a trolleybus replacement for route 691.

In 1963, part of the allocation was transferred to Seven Kings (AP) garage.

In 1964, AEC Routemasters were introduced during weekends.

In 1965, the route was diverted at Barkingside to Caterham Avenue - the journeys to Hainault Industrial Estate continued but were renumbered 169B.

In 1966, Remploy Factory journeys were withdrawn.

In 1968, the Sunday service was extended from Barkingside High Street to Caterham Avenue.

In 1970, Barking (BK) gained the whole allocation.

In 1971, the Sunday service was transferred to Seven Kings (AP) garage.

In 1973, the route was converted to One Person Operation using Daimler Fleetlines and the Sunday service was extended from Barking London Road to Gascoigne Estate. The Sunday service was transferred back to Barking (BK) garage at the same time.

In 1980, the Daimler Fleetlines were replaced by Leylan Titans.

In 1982, the route was extended from Barking to Thames View Estate replacing routes 179 and 199 on this section.

In 1983, the journeys to Rempoly works were reintroduced and withdrawn again in 1987.

In 1991, the route was withdrawn between Barking and Thames View Estate, this section replaced by new routes B1 and B2.

In 1993, the route converted to single deck operation using Optare Deltas and Wright Handybus bodied Dennis Darts.

In 1995, the Wright Handybus bodied Dennis Darts were replaced by Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Darts.

In 2001, the route was retained by Stagecoach London and was converted back to double deck operation using low floor Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Tridents.

In 2006, the route was retained by Stagecoach London.

In 2011, the route was retained by Stagecoach London using brand new Alexander Dennis Enviro 400s.

On 24 March 2018, the route was retained by Stagecoach London.
